Located in the second section of the Chapultepec forest, the Cárcamo de Chapultepec is also known as the Cárcamo de Lerma or de Dolores. It came to life in 1951, after nine years of construction at the hands of the engineers Eduardo Molina Arévalo, Guillermo Torres and the great Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, who precisely made the mural Water, Origin of Life. With this work, Rivera paid tribute to the workers, engineers and architects who participated in the construction of the Cárcamo. In total, Rivera painted more than 200 square meters, which are covered in water, in fact, it is the only underwater mural in the world. After the restoration of the Tláloc Fountain and the renovation of the hydraulic installations, this space was reopened on December 9, 2010 and today it works as an interactive room of the Museum of Natural History and Environmental Culture, which aims to raise awareness among citizenship on the use of water in conjunction with art. The museography is based on the placement of interactive monitors where users can consult in detail the information and history of the underwater mural that Rivera made based on scientific theories about the origin of life and the Lerma-Cutzamala system.
